Georgian MP blasts pro-Armenian Bundestag member for insulting Georgian people
MP Guram Macharashvili from the Power of the People party condemned Michael Roth, Chairman of the German Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, for insulting the Georgian people and the Orthodox Church, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
Roth, visiting Tbilisi, suggested that Georgia's future relies solely on young people's participation in protests against the "foreign agents" law and criticized the influence of the Orthodox Church.
Macharashvili labeled Roth's remarks as insulting and accused him of disregarding Georgia's cultural and religious identity. He asserted that Georgia will defend its Orthodox faith, sovereignty, and identity against external interference.
Chairmen of the parliamentary committees on foreign affairs of Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania and Finland have arrived in Tbilisi on a visit. The politicians spoke at a protest outside the parliament on Tuesday and supported the protesters.
On May 14, the Georgian Parliament adopted in the third reading the draft law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence", which obliges foreign-funded non-governmental organisations and media outlets to register and fill in an annual declaration.
Eighty-four MPs voted in favour of the bill, while thirty voted against it.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has already stated that she will veto the bill, but the parliament has a chance to override it.
It should be noted that Armenianophile Michael Roth has previously repeatedly made provocative statements about Azerbaijan.
