Germany ready to back Ukraine in crucial Istanbul talks with Russia
Germany has affirmed its willingness to support Ukraine in potential negotiations with Russia, which may take place in Istanbul, Türkiye.
German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius confirmed the country’s readiness to attend and assist in the talks, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Cornelius emphasized that while the discussions would primarily focus on negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, European partners, including Germany, are prepared to offer their support.
He underscored the importance of diplomatic dialogue in resolving the ongoing conflict, stating, "Essentially, it will be about negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Nevertheless, support from European partners will be offered."
When asked about the possibility of the talks taking place if Russia refuses to agree to a ceasefire, Cornelius clarified that the decision to proceed with discussions rests solely with Ukraine. "Only Ukraine could make the decision," he said.
The announcement signals Germany's continued commitment to Ukraine’s efforts for peace, while also highlighting the role of European nations in facilitating negotiations during this critical phase of the conflict.
On the night of May 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech in which he proposed that Ukraine resume direct negotiations. He suggested that Moscow and Kyiv could arrange a meeting in Istanbul on May 15.
In response to Putin's statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the implementation of a ceasefire regime in the conflict zone. He further stated that he would personally await Putin in Istanbul, provided the ceasefire is established.
Previously, the Federation Council of Russia dismissed Zelenskyy's proposal for a meeting with Putin, labeling it as a mere ploy.
