Governor confirms fatalities after UAV attack on Russia's Syzran oil facility PHOTO

21 May 2026 09:56

The Syzran Oil Refinery (SNPZ) in Russia’s Samara region was targeted in a drone attack that triggered a fire on the facility’s premises, according to a report by ASTRA citing OSINT analysis and eyewitness footage.

Analysts noted that thick black smoke was seen rising above the industrial zone in Syzran following the strike, indicating significant fire activity at the site.

Regional authorities confirmed the broader security situation in the early hours of the incident. “In the Samara region, the ‘Carpet’ regime is in effect. The airspace at all altitudes has been temporarily closed,” Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev wrote on social media at 4:30 a.m., after earlier warning of a drone threat approximately one hour before.

In a subsequent statement, Fedorishchev reported that the drone strike resulted in fatalities and injuries. According to the governor, two people were killed, and others were wounded, although he did not specify the exact number of injured or the precise location of the incident.

The Syzran Oil Refinery, operated by JSC “Syzran Oil Refinery” and part of PJSC Rosneft, is among the largest refining facilities in the Samara region. It produces a range of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, and liquefied hydrocarbon gases. The plant processes between 7 million and 8.5 million tons of crude oil annually.

The facility has previously been the target of attacks.
