Greek PM warns Zelenskyy over Ukrainian naval drone found in Greek waters
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has raised concerns over a Ukrainian naval drone discovered in Greek waters, warning President Volodymyr Zelenskyy against the expansion of military operations beyond the designated combat zone.
According to the news portal Euractiv, the issue was brought up during a meeting between Mitsotakis and Zelenskyy on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels.
The incident relates to a Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessel, identified as a Magura V5, which was reportedly found in May by a Greek fisherman in a cave near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. The vessel was discovered with its engine still running and carrying a substantial quantity of explosives.
Greek broadcaster Skai reported at the time that the drone was believed by experts to have potentially been intended for use against a vessel that had loaded fuel in a Russian port. Local media said it contained between 100 and 300 kilograms of explosives, which were later removed and destroyed by bomb disposal experts.
Greek authorities are said to have informed Ukraine informally about the discovery on May 18, followed by a formal protest delivered verbally and in writing on June 3. On June 6, Kyiv issued an official apology.
