Historic first: Azerbaijani film site gains accreditation at Cannes Festival
The first and only Azerbaijani film studies website, kinoyazar.az, created at the initiative of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan (UCA), has been accredited for the 78th Cannes International Film Festival, which will take place from May 13 to 24.
According to the UCA, quoted by local media, the website will be represented by one of its authors, film critic Haji Safarov, who will also prepare exclusive reports on the films presented at the festival. This marks a milestone for Azerbaijani film criticism and media.
The Union noted that support for Azerbaijani film critics participating in international festivals will continue. This initiative is expected not only to strengthen Azerbaijan’s international cinematic ties but also to counter Armenian provocations against the country. Being part of the global cinema community is one of the key goals of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan, the statement emphasised.
Notably, actress Juliette Binoche is chairing the jury at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.
Nineteen films are competing in the main category, including:
-
The Phoenician Scheme by Wes Anderson
-
Nouvelle Vague by Richard Linklater
-
Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier
-
Two Prosecutors by Sergei Loznitsa
In addition, legendary actor Robert De Niro will receive an honorary Palme d'Or award.
