Hungarian PM calls Ukraine's EU accession bid "liability"
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has denounced Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union, calling it a burden rather than a benefit.
The remarks came in response to comments made earlier by Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party, during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports.
“The accession of Ukraine is not a good deal. Ukraine is not an added value but a liability. It is a huge mistake to send European funds to Ukraine instead of using them to strengthen the struggling European economy,” the prime minister wrote on X.
He also pointed out that Hungary was admitted to the European Union because it benefited the member states, same as Germany.
He concluded his message by calling on EU leaders to “start representing the European people.”
Earlier, on May 6, speaking at a press conference, Weber stated that Ukraine should get "unconditional support" from the EU, stressing Hungary has benefited from such support for 20 years.
