ICESCO recognises Azerbaijani monuments as potential Islamic Heritage sites
"Shusha Historical and Architectural Reserve" and "Imaret Complex and Juma Mosque in Aghdam" have been included in the Islamic World Heritage Tentative List by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).
The inclusion of these monuments was discussed during the 12th session of the ICESCO World Heritage Committee held in Azerbaijan’s Shusha city, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The meeting participants noted that Azerbaijan's experience in restoring cultural heritage serves as a unique model for revitalizing cultural values in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
Following discussions, committee members decided to add "Shusha Historical and Architectural Reserve" and "Imaret Complex and Juma Mosque in Aghdam" to the Islamic World Heritage Tentative List.
This decision paves the way for their future inclusion in the Islamic World Heritage List. Several sites were added to the Islamic World Heritage List, including the Inner City of Baku (along with the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex), the historic centre of Sheki (including the Khans’ Palace), and the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape at a meeting of the ICESCO World Heritage Committee in Rabat, Morocco in 2019.
