Illegal Armenian armed groups shell Azerbaijani army positions Azerbaijani serviceman wounded

27 June 2023 23:03

The illegal Armenian armed groups in Karabakh have shelled the Azerbaijani army positions in the Aghdam region, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry has said.

"On June 27, at 20:05, illegal Armenian armed detachments in the territory of Azerbaijan, where the Russian peacekeepers are temporarily deployed, using small arms subjected to fire the Azerbaijan Army positions stationed in the direction of the Galaychilar settlement of the Aghdam region," the ministry said in a statement, Caliber.Az reports.

The serviceman of the Azerbaijan Army, Bakirov Ali Shukur, was wounded as a result of the fire. The wounded serviceman was immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, and nothing threatens his life, the ministry added.

The Azerbaijan Army Units took retaliatory measures in the mentioned direction, according to the statement.

To recap, about 2,000 Russian peacekeepers have been deployed for five years in Karabakh under the trilateral cease-fire deal signed by Baku, Moscow and Yerevan on November 10, 2020. The signed agreement obliged Armenia to withdraw all its troops from the Azerbaijani lands that it had occupied since the early 1990s.

Armenia, contrary to paragraph 4 of the trilateral statement, still does not withdraw the remnants of the Armenian armed forces from the region. Armenia continues to send servicemen to the region in violation of Article 6 of the statement.

Meanwhile, a bilateral meeting between Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan kicked off in Arlington, Virginia, the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan said on June 27.

The meeting’s agenda includes the draft agreement on peace and the establishment of interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

During the meeting, Bayramov drew attention to the positions and approaches of Azerbaijan on the issues covered in the draft agreement. Attempts to obstruct the peace process and a number of provocative steps on the part of Armenia were emphasized. In order for the peace process to succeed, it was stated that it is important to refrain from these steps, to withdraw the Armenian armed forces, which have not yet been fully withdrawn from the territories of Azerbaijan, to respect territorial integrity and sovereignty both in word and deed, the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, the US State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said that the talks between the Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers in the US will continue until June 29.
