Impeachment proceedings initiated against Romanian president
The leader of the Romanian political party SOS Romania, Diana Șoșoacă, announced on Thursday the initiation of impeachment proceedings against President Nicușor Dan.
According to Romanian media, the party accuses the head of state of acting against “national interests” and contributing to the deepening political and economic crisis in Romania.
In a statement, Șoșoacă described the move as “decisive and necessary,” adding that the party intends to see the process through to completion and prevent it from being taken over by other political forces.
Under Romania’s Constitution, the impeachment of a sitting president requires the backing of at least one-third of members of parliament, including both deputies and senators. The process must also involve a review by the Constitutional Court, followed by a national referendum to be held within 30 days.
While impeachment attempts have occurred several times in post-communist Romania, none have ultimately led to the removal of a president after a referendum.
