Iran begins construction of border walls to boost security
Iran has commenced the construction of walls along its eastern borders as part of an initiative to address security risks, according to Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi, a commander of the Islamic Republic’s Border Guard Police.
General Goudarzi outlined that the project aims to curb the smuggling of fuel, goods, and particularly drugs, while also tackling illegal immigration, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media,
He emphasized that the primary focus of this initiative is to secure the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“Based on security and military assessments, the most critical areas are the borderlines with Pakistan and Afghanistan, which account for 80% of drug trafficking into Iran,” General Goudarzi explained.
Construction efforts have already begun in the southern provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, as well as Khorasan Razavi. The next phase of the project will expand to include Ilam, Kurdistan, and West Azerbaijan provinces, located in the western frontiers of the country.
General Goudarzi confirmed that funding for the border wall project has been secured, with current efforts focused on equipping construction sites for the work ahead.
