Iran, Oman discuss preparation for upcoming nuclear talks in Geneva

23 February 2026 11:24

As part of regional diplomatic exchanges, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held discussions with his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi regarding preparations for the upcoming round of nuclear negotiations with the United States, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

On February 22, the foreign ministers held a phone call to exchange views on the current status of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington. They discussed coordinating necessary steps and measures to ensure the next round is conducted effectively, emphasising both sides’ commitment to making progress through dialogue.

Oman has traditionally served as a mediator in Iran–U.S. negotiations. The two previous rounds of indirect talks, held in Muscat and Geneva, involved active participation from senior Omani diplomats, helping maintain contact between the parties and creating conditions for constructive dialogue.

Late on February 22, Albusaidi confirmed on X that Iran and the United States will hold the third round of nuclear negotiations on Thursday, February 26, in Geneva. “Pleased to confirm US-Iran negotiations are now set for Geneva this Thursday, with a positive push to go the extra mile towards finalizing the deal,” wrote the minister, who is serving as a mediator in the indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

The upcoming negotiations follow two previous rounds of talks held earlier this month in Geneva as Washington and Tehran seek to resolve a long‑running dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

The first round of indirect talks took place on February 6, when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met in Geneva to discuss possible frameworks for a deal, though no breakthrough was achieved and core issues such as uranium enrichment remained unresolved.

A second round concluded on February 17, with both sides acknowledging some progress on guiding principles but stopping short of an agreement. Reports said negotiators agreed to draft and review detailed proposals ahead of further meetings.
