Iran prepares nuclear deal proposal, urges US to act in own interest
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has urged the United States to seriously consider Tehran’s forthcoming proposal on the nuclear deal, warning that Washington should not squander this critical opportunity.
Speaking at a press briefing, Baghaei outlined Iran’s position amid ongoing indirect nuclear negotiations mediated through Oman, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
Since April 12, the US and Iran have conducted five rounds of talks aimed at reaching a renewed agreement, with discussions centered on contentious issues such as uranium enrichment levels. “It cannot be said in any way that every country that engages in enrichment necessarily has a weapons program. Currently, many countries, including some US allies, are engaged in enrichment but do not have any military or weapons programs,” Baghaei asserted, highlighting the distinction between peaceful nuclear activity and weaponisation.
He further characterised Iran’s nuclear stance as a form of deterrence, stating, “If deterrence refers to Iran’s resistance against excessive foreign demands, then yes—our stance serves as a deterrent against pressures that go beyond legal and international norms.” The spokesman stressed that uranium enrichment is an indispensable strategic asset, developed through decades of indigenous scientific endeavour and critical to Iran’s national interests. “This indigenous technology has been developed through decades of sustained effort by Iranian scientists, and it is in no way a topic open to negotiation or compromise,” he affirmed.
Regarding the imminent sixth round of negotiations, Baghaei refrained from providing specific details, noting, “At this time, I have nothing specific to share with reporters about the sixth round of negotiations; if a decision is made, it will be announced later.” However, he made clear that any proposal falling short of safeguarding Iran’s national interests will be unacceptable.
Baghaei concluded by confirming that Iran will soon submit its own proposal via Oman, urging Washington to seize the moment: “We strongly recommend the American side not to waste this opportunity — it’s in their own interest to take it seriously.”
