Russia sets new record for electricity consumption amid freezing temperatures
Russia's Unified Energy System (UES) has recorded a historic surge in electricity demand, setting a new all-time high in power consumption due to the country's prolonged cold snap.
On January 22, the UES recorded a peak of 171,943 MW, surpassing the previous record of 171,389 MW set just over a month earlier on December 11, 2023. The new figure represents an increase of 554 MW from the previous high, Caliber.Az reports.
The UES attributed the spike in electricity consumption to unusually low temperatures, which have gripped much of Russia, creating significant demand for heating across the nation. The cold weather, which has continued into late January, has prompted millions of households and businesses to rely heavily on electricity for warmth.
The UES System Operator noted that the record-breaking consumption was reached during the early morning hours on January 22, underscoring the severity of the ongoing cold front. While the UES continues to monitor the situation, it has assured the public that energy supply remains stable despite the increased demand.
