Iran says door to US talks on nuclear programme remains open

02 September 2025 20:08

Iran has not ruled out resuming negotiations with the United States over its nuclear programme, but Washington is imposing conditions Tehran considers unacceptable, the secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council has said.

Ali Larijani wrote on X: “The path for negotiations with the US is not closed; yet these are the Americans who only pay lip service to talks and do not come to the table; and they wrongfully blame Iran for it."

Larijani emphasised that Iran remains committed to constructive dialogue, despite the hurdles posed by Washington’s demands.

"WE INDEED PURSUE RATIONAL NEGOTIATIONS. By raising unrealizable issues such as missile restrictions, they set a path which negates any talks,” he noted.

Iran and the United States had planned to hold the sixth round of their indirect nuclear negotiations on June 15 in Oman.

However, the talks were suspended after Israel carried out major airstrikes on June 13 against multiple Iranian sites, including nuclear and military facilities. The United States subsequently launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites on June 22.

On August 28, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington continues to seek direct talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, following the action by France, Britain and Germany – known collectively as the E3 – to trigger the "snapback" mechanism, thereby reinstating UN sanctions on Tehran.
