Iran urges IAEA to maintain professionalism amid nuclear monitoring
Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to uphold professionalism in its conduct and avoid any politicized actions regarding Tehran's nuclear program.
Eslami made the statement as he gave a press briefing following a weekly cabinet meeting in Tehran, Caliber.Az reports citing Iranian media.
In his remarks, Eslami stressed that Iran is in regular communication with the IAEA and is subject to ongoing, routine inspections by the agency, which are conducted daily. He emphasized that these inspections are carried out according to the agreed-upon schedule and that Iran remains transparent in its cooperation with the IAEA.
However, Eslami expressed concerns over what he described as undue pressure from the European troika (the UK, France, and Germany) to influence the IAEA’s reporting on Iran. He criticized these efforts, calling them an attempt to politicize the agency’s work.
“The IAEA should protect the rights of all its member states in accordance with international law,” Eslami stated, urging the nuclear watchdog to avoid political bias and let the law dictate its actions.
Eslami further expressed his hope that the IAEA would refrain from becoming a tool for political pressure or illegitimate actions aimed at Iran. His comments reflect Tehran’s growing frustration with what it perceives as external attempts to shape the IAEA's conclusions in ways that undermine its national interests.
As tensions continue surrounding Iran's nuclear activities, Eslami’s call for professionalism underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing diplomatic relations with the international community and ensuring compliance with international nuclear nonproliferation agreements.
To recall, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to present a comprehensive report on Iran's nuclear program at its upcoming meeting, following mounting pressure from European countries.
Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), confirmed that the report will be submitted in response to the increasing scrutiny on Iran’s nuclear activities.
In a statement to the press, Eslami outlined that the IAEA's report would be divided into two sections. The first part will focus on inspections carried out by the agency, while the second will address the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which governs Iran’s nuclear activities. Eslami noted that the three European signatories of the JCPOA have ramped up pressure on Iran, leading to the IAEA’s decision to prepare the report for the agency’s next session.
This development follows a resolution passed by the IAEA Board of Governors on November 21, 2024, which criticized Iran for allegedly insufficient cooperation with the organization. The resolution called for a detailed report on Iran’s nuclear program by the spring of 2025. The resolution passed with 19 votes in favor, three votes against, and 12 abstentions.
