Israeli FM: Türkiye seeks to dominate Sunni Islam, wields power over Syria
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has warned that Türkiye is seeking to establish itself as the dominant force in Sunni Islam while exerting significant influence over Syria’s new regime.
"It is essential to closely monitor the activities of the new Syrian regime. One thing is clear: Türkiye has the greatest influence over it," he said during a meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chișinău, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
"For us, the most important thing is ensuring our security. The Iranian threat remains the most pressing issue, but it is also crucial to pay attention to Türkiye's actions in the region. At present, Türkiye is the most dominant country in Syria and is striving to become the leader of Sunni Islam in the region," the Foreign Minister noted.
Earlier, Saar officially inaugurated Israel’s embassy in Moldova. The ceremonial event was attended by Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi, as well as official delegations from both countries.
This marks the first-ever permanent Israeli embassy in Moldova. Israel officially recognized Moldova’s independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations were established in 1992.
Since 1994, Moldova has had an embassy in Israel, but until now, Israel had been represented in Chișinău by a non-resident ambassador. In December 2024, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar decided to establish a permanent diplomatic mission.
