Israeli police prepare to reopen Jerusalem's Old City holy sites after ceasefire

09 April 2026 08:40

Israeli authorities are moving to reopen key religious sites in Jerusalem’s Old City for prayer and public gatherings following the two-week ceasefire declared between the United States and Iran.

The Home Front Command has eased its wartime safety restrictions, now permitting public gatherings in Jerusalem without limitations, according to Israeli media.

In response, Jerusalem District police confirmed that worshipers and visitors will be allowed to enter and gather in the Old City starting April 9.

The area has remained a major flashpoint throughout the recent hostilities with Iran, intensifying concerns over access to religious sites and the ability to worship freely during periods of conflict.

Earlier this week, Jewish religious leaders submitted a petition to the High Court of Justice, calling for an easing of restrictions at key holy sites, including the Western Wall and the Temple Mount. Following the appeal, judges increased the permitted number of attendees from 50 to 100.

Tensions had already escalated last month when police barred the Latin Patriarch from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre during Palm Sunday, triggering international criticism. Authorities later reached an agreement with the Latin Patriarchate to allow limited Christian prayer at the site.

Meanwhile, during the latter part of Ramadan, law enforcement authorities closed Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, prompting large groups of Muslim worshipers to gather outside the Old City walls for Friday prayers. Several of these gatherings were forcibly dispersed by police, who cited Home Front Command regulations.

Police officials say they are anticipating a significant influx of worshipers and visitors following the reopening and are preparing to deploy hundreds of officers across the Old City to maintain security and manage crowds.
