ISW: Russian forces using novel EW-resistant drones against Ukraine
Russian military forces are increasingly using drones attached to fibre-optic cables to attack Ukrainian Armed Forces positions, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
These cables are resistant to electronic warfare (EW) interference in strikes against Ukrainian forces throughout the frontline.
On January 8, a representative from one of the Ukrainian brigades stated that the Russian army had not yet systematically used fibre-optic drones, Caliber.Az reports.
According to him, these drones are slower and less manoeuvrable than those equipped with surveillance capabilities from high altitudes, making them more vulnerable to being shot down with small arms fire.
One of the Russian military bloggers claimed that the Russian forces were the first to successfully develop and integrate fibre-optic drones into combat operations in Ukraine.
Moreover, he warned that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would soon develop similar innovations. Therefore, Russian forces will have to create new means to counter Ukrainian fibre-optic drones.
