Italy: August 2025 peace accord opens new chapter for South Caucasus
Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Edmondo Cirielli, said the Washington summit of 8 August 2025 — which brought together the leaders of Azerbaijan, the US and Armenia — has significantly improved the situation in the South Caucasus.
Cirielli made the comments in Baku during the sixth session of the Italy–Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission, domestic media noted.
“In Washington on 8 August, thanks to President Donald Trump, an important event took place — one of truly historic scale. We believe that the new peaceful environment will open many opportunities not only for the region itself. I wish peace prevailed across the whole world the way it does in the South Caucasus,” he stated.
He also highlighted that the establishment of the Italy–Azerbaijan University in Baku reflects both the strength of bilateral ties and their continued advancement.
The peace agreement Cirielli referred to was achieved at the landmark Washington summit on August 8, 2025, where Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reached an accord under the mediation of US President Donald Trump. The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia initialled the 17-article document, marking a significant step toward a comprehensive peace treaty.
A central component of the agreement is the plan to establish a strategic corridor known as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP). Designed to run through Armenian territory and link Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave, the project resolves one of the most sensitive issues between the two sides. It grants Baku a direct connection between the two parts of its territory without the need for circuitous routes or transit through third countries, while allowing Yerevan to avoid territorial concessions that could set unwelcome precedents in international law.
