Italy faces nationwide 24-hour strike disrupting transport and services
Italy is experiencing its second nationwide 24-hour strike in less than two weeks, organised by several trade unions, according to Il Messaggero.
The protest is primarily affecting rail and public transport, as well as education and healthcare services. In several regions, disruptions to transport networks have been reported, schools have been closed, and hospitals are operating only emergency services.
Trade unions say the strike is directed against the “war economy,” rising military spending, and government social policies. Their demands include higher wages, a minimum hourly wage of no less than €12, increased social investment in schools and hospitals, as well as support for peace and opposition to the financing of armed conflicts.
Participants are also expressing support for Palestine and protesting against restrictions on the right to demonstrate, arguing that authorities should take into account workers who “reject imposed wars.”
The protest has drawn criticism from opponents, who accuse organisers of politicising labour issues and refusing to work.
The strike comes on Friday ahead of a long weekend linked to the transfer of a working day before Republic Day, which is celebrated on June 2.
