Japanese fighter jets scramble to escort Russian reconnaissance aircraft
Japan's Self-Defence Forces scrambled fighter jets in response to the overflight of a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft along the western coast of Hokkaido and Honshu.
The incident occurred on April 4, with the Russian aircraft flying over the waters of the Sea of Japan before changing course and returning toward the mainland, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
The Japanese Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the event, stating that the Il-20's flight prompted a rapid response from Japan’s Northern Air Defence Force. Fighter jets from the Japan Air Self-Defence Force were deployed to monitor and escort the Russian aircraft.
This latest incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region and the vigilance of Japan's military forces in safeguarding its airspace. The Il-20, a key Russian intelligence-gathering asset, has previously been involved in similar reconnaissance missions near Japan's borders, prompting the Japanese military to remain on high alert.
The response from Japan underlines its commitment to defending its territory and maintaining security in the region amidst growing military activities from neighboring nations. The Japanese Self-Defence Forces continue to closely monitor developments in the area to ensure the safety of Japanese airspace.
