Japanese Hita's riverside offers peaceful views and relaxation

08 November 2024 01:03

Hita City nestled in the scenic region of Japan's Kyushu offers visitors a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and unique experiences that often go unnoticed by many tourists.

Kyushu Island is often overlooked by international tourists, but it’s a destination well worth adding to your travel itinerary. Offering hidden gems and unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences, Kyushu has much to offer that you won’t find anywhere else, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

One of its standout spots is Hita City, a place rich in history and culture, often referred to as the “Little Kyoto of Kyushu.” During the Edo period (1603-1868), Hita served as the political, economic, and cultural hub of the region, functioning as a “tenryo” (land directly controlled by the Shogunate). Today, it has become a pilgrimage site for Attack on Titan fans, as it’s the birthplace of Hajime Isayama, the manga artist behind the hit anime series. Located just over an hour away from Fukuoka Airport in Hakata by car or train, Hita is easily accessible. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by a giant sushi display at the luggage carousel. Hita is conveniently situated on the way to other popular destinations like Beppu and Yufuin, which are famous for their onsen hot springs. It’s a great addition to any trip.

The area boasts stunning natural beauty, particularly at Hoshuyama Station on the JR Kyushu Hitahikosan Line, which is unique for being a "Kenkyuu eki" (Prefectural Border Station), as the platform stretches across the border between Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures. But the hidden treasures don’t stop there. We were recently introduced to a beautiful onsen hot spring facility located just a 10-minute drive from Hita Station, in a peaceful area south of the city center that feels like an undiscovered haven.

Continuing along the Takase River in Oita Prefecture, you’ll spot a sign for "Kotohira Onsen"—a secret gem that awaits just a short distance beyond. This facility functions as both an inn and a day-use onsen, so if you're stopping by for a day trip, you can pay the bathing fee at the charming retro-style reception booth. Adults (junior high school age and older) pay 800 yen (US$5.25), while children (ages 4 through elementary school students) pay 400 yen. The facility also offers 16 "Family Baths" that can be reserved for private use at a rate of 2,000-2,500 yen per bath for 60 minutes.
