Kamala Harris: Elimination of Hamas leader could pave way for Gaza ceasefire

21 October 2024 12:00

Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States and a Democratic presidential candidate, has stated that the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas political bureau, could facilitate a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Harris stated that although it will be difficult and challenging, we must end this war and free the hostages, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

“We are sending Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the region next week to meet with the parties involved. And I believe that Sinwar's death has removed a barrier to achieving this,” she noted.

Remarks by Harris come amidst escalating tensions in the region and highlight the Biden administration’s efforts to engage diplomatically while addressing security concerns.

Notably, in the aftermath of the announcement that Israeli forces had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, officials in the United States hailed the event as an opportunity to shift the narrative of the ongoing conflict and consider a "day after" for Gaza.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan described the killing as a chance to create a "better day for the people of Gaza, the people of Israel, and the whole region."

Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris echoed Sullivan's sentiments in their statements.

However, Israeli leaders conveyed a starkly different message. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that the war is "not over" and vowed that Israeli forces would remain active in Gaza for "years to come."
