Kazakh ex-president's nephew sentenced to six years in prison
Former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's elder nephew, Kairat Satybaldyuly, has been sentenced to six years in prison.
He will serve his sentence in a medium-security prison, according to Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Kairat Satybaldyuly was charged with large-scale embezzlement from Kazakhtelecom, tax evasion, and the legalisation of criminal proceeds (based on Criminal Code articles such as "causing property damage by deception or abuse of trust" and "misappropriation or embezzlement, that is, theft of someone else's property entrusted to the guilty").
"Satybaldyuly will be sentenced to six years and the property will be confiscated," judge Nurlan Bayakhmetov read out the verdict during the trial.
Moreover, Satybaldyuly was also stripped of the rank of major general of the national security agencies, as well as the Kurmet and Parasat orders, and was banned to hold certain positions for 10 years.
