Top religious official: Every Azerbaijani rooted in spirit of tolerance
Azerbaijan is home to people of different religions and nationalities living in peace and mutual respect, reflecting centuries-old traditions of tolerance, with tolerance being a way of life embedded in the spiritual world of every Azerbaijani, Ramin Mammadov, Chairman of the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations, said.
He made remarks during the opening ceremony of the second Forum of Religious Figures in Azerbaijan, noting that the country, as a secular state, respects religious differences, Caliber.Az reports.
“Historically, our homeland has been one of the rare spiritual centres where civilisations converged and diverse ethnic and religious groups lived as one family in an atmosphere of mutual respect and love. Tolerance here is a way of life, embedded in the spiritual world of every Azerbaijani,” Mammadov said.
He emphasised that Azerbaijan’s history is defined not only by political and economic achievements but also by a rich value system rooted in spiritual principles, respect, and commitment to freedom of religion.
“The model of state-religious relations we have is not only legally regulated but also a vivid expression of the high culture, tolerance, and humanistic worldview of our people, developed over thousands of years and refined through complex historical trials. Preserving this heritage and passing it on to future generations is a key priority of our state policy and national identity,” he added.
Mammadov noted that freedom of religion in Azerbaijan is not only a formal right, but a genuine value guaranteed by the constitution. Religion is not used as a tool of governance, yet the state does not remain indifferent; all faiths enjoy equal rights and opportunities.
He also highlighted the importance of regular visits by foreign religious leaders and diplomats to Azerbaijan, which help prevent biased ideological campaigns against the country and promote awareness of Azerbaijan’s tolerant environment, especially regarding the protection of religious heritage in liberated territories.
“The state-religion model in Azerbaijan is a national treasure. We take pride that mosques, churches, and synagogues are open to all sincerely, with each place of worship receiving comprehensive state care. Tolerance and multiculturalism are not only our proud past, but also the guarantee of a bright and prosperous future,” Mammadov concluded.
