Azerbaijan, UN achieve significant progress on refugee and IDP programs
Significant progress has been made in Azerbaijan in the implementation of humanitarian projects and development programs for refugees and internally displaced persons carried out jointly with United Nations institutions, according to the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva.
As reported by local media, Andreeva made the remarks during a meeting with Rovshan Rzayev, chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, which was held to mark the completion of her term as UN Resident Coordinator in the country.
During the meeting, the parties noted that Azerbaijan’s long-standing cooperation with the United Nations and its specialised agencies has played a key role in addressing the challenges arising from refugee and internally displaced person issues faced by the country.
Special attention was drawn to the measures taken by the Azerbaijani government to ensure the safe return of former internally displaced persons to their homes. The large-scale reconstruction and restoration work underway in Karabakh and East Zangezur was also highlighted, with participants noting that these efforts are generating considerable interest at the international level.
At the same time, the importance of continued cooperation between international organisations and Azerbaijan in addressing the persistent mine threat in the liberated territories was emphasised.
The meeting also gave high praise to the cooperation between the State Committee and Vladanka Andreeva during her tenure as UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.
It was noted that under her leadership, the partnership with UN institutions deepened, and tangible results were achieved in the implementation of humanitarian projects and development programs related to refugees and internally displaced persons.
