Kazakh holding reveals when intermodal cargo terminal in Baku Port to be fully built
Construction of a new intermodal cargo terminal on the territory of Baku International Sea Trade Port is planned to be completed next year, said Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the board of Kazakhstan's Samruk-Kazyna holding company.
According to him, containers and cargo from China to Europe and other countries will pass through the terminal, which will increase the cargo flow along the Middle Corridor, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"At the initial stage, 330,000-350,000 containers in the equivalent of TEU [twenty-foot equivalent unit] will be transported annually," he said.
Let's us emphasize that this strategic project aims to enhance regional logistics capabilities and strengthen trade connectivity between Central Asia, the Caucasus, and beyond.
The new terminal will integrate multiple modes of transport, including rail, road, and maritime, to streamline cargo handling and improve the efficiency of freight movement across the region. Located in the rapidly developing transport hub of Baku, the facility is set to become a key link in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, which connects China to Europe through Central Asia.
This initiative aligns with Samruk-Kazyna’s broader strategy to boost Kazakhstan's export potential, diversify logistics routes, and reduce dependency on traditional trade corridors. The Baku terminal is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating trade flow and enhancing the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor as an alternative to the Northern and Southern transport routes.
