Kazakhstan mine tragedy: Death toll reaches seven as last body found
Rescue workers have recovered the body of the final miner killed in a collapse at the Zhomart mine in Kazakhstan’s Ulytau region, bringing the death toll to seven, the Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed.
“All seven workers have been found, and their bodies have been handed over to police for forensic examination,” the ministry said in a statement, Caliber.Az reports via Kazakhstani media.
To recall, the collapse occurred on February 17, at the Zhomart mine, operated by Kazakhmys Group. Authorities said a natural gas explosion was the likely cause.
“Preliminary findings suggest a gas explosion led to the incident,” the company said.
The government has launched an investigation, with Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev leading a commission to determine the cause and ensure support for affected families.
The victims' relatives will receive financial assistance, including compensation of ten times the average annual salary, funeral costs, and additional social benefits, Kazakhmys said.
The regional government has also pledged psychological and social support.
