Kenyan TV report highlights Karabakh among world’s most heavily mined regions VIDEO

06 May 2026 10:18

Kenyan television channel TV47 has aired a report on demining operations in the territories of Azerbaijan that were liberated from occupation.

The channel’s correspondent, Elizabeth Mutuku, visited the Aghdam district, which is considered one of the most affected areas by the mine threat across the Karabakh region.

“Landmines are still buried beneath the ground along roads, in homes, and farmlands. Karabakh is one of the most heavily mined regions in the world. Azerbaijan estimates up to 1.5 million landmines and unexploded devices remain in the area,” Mutuku noted, adding that every step in these territories remains dangerous.

According to the journalist, clearance work is slow and extremely dangerous. Demining teams operate with extreme caution, checking every signal and clearing the area step by step.

“Give you the concrete time of the mine cleansing process, as we can't anticipate the time of cleansing those landmines here in this region, because there are a lot of landmines and it's heavily polluted, and some of them like less polluted, and it might take more than we think it would take,” said Namiq Balaev, a representative of the demining service, speaking to the channel.

The broadcaster highlighted that despite the use of modern equipment, drones, and specially trained mine detection dogs, a significant part of the work is still carried out manually.

“These are some of the land mines which have been deeply hidden in this land and which have been successfully identified during the process. And here we have even dangerous ammunitions which have been lying deep in this land as the process continues with hope of making it habitable as it can be,” the report stated.
