Kremlin allegedly discussing invasion of NATO, warns EU defence commissioner
The Kremlin is reportedly discussing a scenario involving a potential Russian invasion of NATO countries, with Western intelligence agencies claiming to have evidence, according to Andrius Kubilius, EU Commissioner for Defence.
In an interview with Wyborcza, Kubilius stressed the seriousness of the reports, saying, “I trust the intelligence services. German intelligence claims it has evidence that the Kremlin is discussing an attack on NATO. Are they planning an attack if they are discussing it? We don’t know. But such signals must be taken extremely seriously. They could indeed be ready for war. We also need to be ready and learn not only from the experience of Ukrainians but also from the Russians,” he said.
Kubilius acknowledged that the Russian army is bogged down in Ukraine, which is unsatisfactory for anyone in the Kremlin. At the same time, he noted that Russia has adapted to modern warfare tactics and produces a huge amount of weaponry.
The EU commissioner added that Ukraine is ready to assist Western allies in preparing for a possible Russian invasion. However, Kubilius stressed that it is not enough just to buy interceptor drones and learn to operate them.
“We need to learn flexibility from the Ukrainians. Look at their defence industry. It is now based on startups. But they don’t just produce equipment; they monitor its use on the battlefield and continuously improve it. Companies producing drones actually have their own drone battalions. It is striking how Ukrainians have freed themselves from bureaucratic structures in the face of the Russian attack,” the commissioner noted.
