Kremlin denies any military assistance commitment to Iran amid ongoing conflict

The Kremlin has firmly ruled out any commitments to provide military assistance to Iran, emphasizing that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and Iran contains no provisions for mutual military aid. Furthermore, Tehran has not formally requested such support from Moscow.

In an interview with local media, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified Moscow’s position on the matter, Caliber.Az reports.

“Talking to the heads of news agencies, President Putin, answering the question whether Russia will militarily help Iran, said that militarily, firstly, Iran has not asked for help from us, and secondly, even in the context of the treaty we have with Iran, there is no provision there for military mutual assistance in such situations. There is no such provision,” Peskov stated unequivocally.

Despite this, the Kremlin highlighted Russia’s diplomatic backing for Iran. Peskov recalled, “Our statement when this conflict started, the statement of the Foreign Ministry, contained words of condemnation of the strikes and our insistent position that it is necessary to stop the strikes and move to peaceful negotiations.” This stance underlines Moscow’s preference for diplomatic resolution over military escalation.

In addition, Peskov noted that Russia has positioned itself as a potential mediator in the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. “This was also said by President Putin to his American vis-à-vis, President Trump, and it was also discussed in telephone conversations that Putin held days earlier with both Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Pezeshkian,” he explained.
