Kremlin warns Armenia over balancing EU ambitions with EAEU commitments
Russia has warned that Armenia could face growing tensions between its closer ties with the European Union and its obligations within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that as Armenia deepens engagement with the EU, it may eventually encounter situations where EU-aligned regulations conflict with EAEU rules.
“Armenia, as it moves closer to the EU, will sooner or later find itself in a situation where the norms it adopts will contradict the norms and rules of the EAEU,” Peskov told Russian state news agency TASS.
He stressed that Armenia’s European integration is a sovereign decision, but said it should not come at the expense of other EAEU member states.
“Moving toward the European Union, which is the absolute sovereign right of Armenia, Armenia cannot and should not do this at the expense of EAEU countries’ financial resources. In other words, it should do this at its own expense,” he said.
