Kurdish forces deploy reinforcements to Deir ez-Zor after failed assault
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led coalition of US-backed militias and rebel groups, has sent significant reinforcements to the town of Jadid Okaidat in Deir ez-Zor province, located near the front lines with forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad and Iranian-backed militias.
According to sources from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the reinforcements include heavy machinery, armoured vehicles, and a large number of soldiers, per Caliber.Az.
In the same region, pro-government snipers have been deployed to the water tank at the paper factory in Al-Hassiniya, a town west of Deir ez-Zor, to monitor the movements of the SDF.
On December 4, the Syrian government reported that its counteroffensive had successfully repelled opposition forces attempting to advance toward the strategic city of Hama. Meanwhile, opposition forces claimed to have captured more Syrian and Iran-backed fighters during intense clashes.
In recent days, opposition fighters, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Syrian National Army (SNA) forces, have made significant advances, including capturing large areas of northern Aleppo and several towns in the southern part of Idlib province. HTS is now considered the dominant force in these regions.
The ongoing civil war, now in its 13th year, has led to an estimated half-million casualties, as Assad’s forces, backed by Russia and Iran, face a broad array of opposition groups seeking to overthrow his regime.
Syrian media reported on December 4 that opposition forces had retreated around 20 kilometres from Hama, as government troops, supported by Russian airstrikes, fortified their positions on the city’s outskirts.
