Le Point urges President Macron to resign “with his head held high”

09 October 2025 18:23

French weekly magazine Le Point has released its latest edition with a cover urging President Emmanuel Macron to step down, as the country grapples with deepening political instability.

The cover features a photo of the president alongside the bold headline: “Mr President, leave with your head held high," Caliber.Az reports.

In an editorial column, Le Point’s journalist and director, Etienne Gernelle, argued that Macron should consider resigning before the end of his term to avoid prolonging what he described as a looming “nightmare” for France. Gernelle stated that with 18 months remaining in Macron's presidency, there is little chance of the head of state achieving his political goals or stabilising the country following the dissolution of the National Assembly in June 2024.

According to Gernelle, an early presidential election could be held in 2026, shortly after the municipal elections scheduled for March that year. He suggested that this timeline would allow for a properly organised campaign, reduce the duration of political uncertainty, and give Macron a chance to protect the legacy of his presidency.

Gernelle also wrote that such a move would allow Macron to leave office “with his head held high,” preserving what he believes are the president’s legitimate accomplishments.

The call for resignation comes amid significant political turbulence. On October 6, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu tendered his resignation to Macron, following a wave of criticism from opposition leaders in response to the announcement of a new government. The revised cabinet retained 13 of its 18 ministers from the previous lineup, drawing accusations of stagnation and political tone-deafness.

Particular backlash was directed at the appointment of Bruno Le Maire, formerly Minister of the Economy and Finance, as the new Minister of the Armed Forces. Le Maire has been widely criticised for his handling of France’s economic challenges, and his new role has only intensified scrutiny of Macron’s leadership.
