Maldives ratifies amendment banning entry of Israeli passport holders

15 April 2025 22:10

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has ratified the third amendment to the country’s Immigration Act, subsequent to its approval by the People’s Majlis during the 20th sitting of the first session of the year.

The amendment introduces a significant change to the country's immigration policy, explicitly prohibiting individuals holding Israeli passports from entering the Republic of Maldives, Caliber.Az reports citing the Maldivian president’s office.

This move underscores the Maldivian government's steadfast position in response to ongoing violence and alleged human rights violations committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. In a statement following the ratification, the Government of Maldives reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with Palestine and its commitment to advocating for the rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people on the international stage.

The ratification of the amendment aligns with the Maldives’ long-standing policy of supporting Palestine and condemning Israel's actions. President Dr. Muizzu has frequently expressed the nation’s firm stance on the Palestinian cause, calling for justice and accountability for Israel’s alleged violations of international law. Furthermore, the Maldives has consistently been vocal in its support for a two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with United Nations resolutions and international legal principles.

In addition to the legal change, the Maldives has continued to use international platforms to call for an end to Israel's actions, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rights of the Palestinian people and ensuring accountability in accordance with global legal standards.

The newly ratified provision is seen as a continuation of the Maldives' foreign policy approach, which is deeply rooted in supporting global human rights initiatives and fostering international peace and justice.
