Media: Brazil’s president offers mediation role in Russia-Ukraine talks During Kremlin Meeting
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has proposed himself as a potential mediator in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 9 in the Kremlin.
Celso Amorim, the Brazilian President’s special adviser on international affairs, stated that Lula extended the offer during talks centred on initiatives previously developed in partnership between Beijing and Brasília, Caliber.Az reports per CNN Brazil.
The Brazilian leader expressed his willingness to assist in facilitating the dialogue.
Amorim further stated that Brazil’s stance on the matter aligns closely with the approach taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump, aiming to support the swift commencement of peace talks.
Notably, Lula da Silva visited Moscow for the first time in 15 years, offering wide-ranging cooperation with Russia on nuclear energy, defence, and space. During his meeting with President Vladimir Putin, Lula expressed interest in Russia's small nuclear reactors and announced bilateral memoranda on cooperation in energy, science, and technology.
He also criticised U.S. trade policies and reiterated Brazil's strategic partnership with Russia. The visit came after Lula previously declined an invitation to Russia in 2023, citing work commitments. Lula continues to position himself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict.
