Media: Ceasefire between Israel, Hamas takes effect in Gaza
A ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas has come into effect in the Gaza Strip, Israeli media reports.
The truce, marking the first phase of a US-brokered plan, aims to halt months of hostilities and pave the way for a broader peace framework.
According to Reuters, the agreement stipulates that Hamas will release the remaining Israeli hostages within 72 hours, while the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) will begin a partial withdrawal from Gaza within 24 hours. The deal also includes provisions for the release of Palestinian prisoners and a withdrawal of Israeli troops to agreed positions.
US President Donald Trump welcomed the development in an interview with Fox News, saying the first group of hostages is expected to be released on October 13. He did not address unresolved issues in the proposal, including Hamas’s disarmament and the future governance of Gaza.
