Media: Europe braces for potential reduction in US military support
European countries are preparing for a potential reduction in US military assets earmarked for deployment to Europe in the event of a crisis or war, individuals familiar with discussions within NATO structures told Bloomberg.
In recent weeks, Washington has reportedly outlined significant cuts to its contribution to NATO’s force planning model during meetings at the alliance’s political and military headquarters. The model defines the forces and equipment the United States would make available from outside Europe in the event of a major security emergency.
According to a senior Western military official cited in reporting, the proposed adjustments include a 30% reduction in strategic bomber availability, capabilities which European NATO members do not possess. The changes are also said to involve a reduction of between 75% and 100% in reconnaissance and strike drone contributions, as well as an approximately 50% reduction in naval assets designated for potential deployment.
The timeline for implementing these reductions has not been made clear, and no official public confirmation has been issued by NATO or US defence authorities regarding the scope of the changes.
