Media: Türkiye may step up Ukraine mediation after Trump's victory
The victory of Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the US election may lead to Türkiye stepping up its mediation efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.
"Russian President Vladimir Putin's calculation has worked. This process can bring Turkish President Recep Erdogan to the forefront, as he is the only leader who can talk to Putin, Zelenskyy and Trump," the publication said.
It is noted that the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy lost the results of the elections in the United States. Among the winners, the piece calls Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Notably, Türkiye is continuing its efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022.
Ankara has repeatedly urged Kyiv and Moscow to end the fighting through negotiations, with Türkiye ready for any initiative, including mediation, to lay the groundwork for peace.
Türkiye first hosted a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers in the Mediterranean city of Antalya in March 2022.
Those efforts led to the landmark Black Sea grain deal in 2022, but Moscow did not extend the agreement after July 2023, citing restrictions on Russian grain exports.
