Media: US president backs Russia, questions Ukraine’s commitment to peace
US President Donald Trump’s recent foreign policy actions have sparked concern, especially regarding his increasingly Moscow-friendly stance.
Trump’s treatment of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a partner, contrasted with his apparent antagonism toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is raising alarms among NATO allies and even some Republicans, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The latest development comes with Trump’s decision to suspend all military aid to Ukraine, which he justifies by stating he is "focused on peace" and that Ukraine must also "be committed to that goal as well."
A White House official said that this shift aims to encourage peace efforts. Trump further indicated his belief that Russia wants peace but suggested that "maybe someone doesn’t want to make a deal," an apparent reference to Zelenskyy. Trump added, "If someone doesn’t want to make a deal, I think that person won’t be around very long," hinting at the growing calls from MAGA supporters for Zelenskyy’s resignation or a new election in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has applauded this shift, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praising Trump’s "common sense," and other Kremlin officials reveling in Trump’s tough stance against Zelenskyy. This comes amid a series of Moscow-friendly moves from Trump, including potential sanctions relief for Russia, the suspension of US Cyber Command's offensive operations against Russia, and a call for new elections in Ukraine. These actions align with Putin’s original goals in the invasion, notably regime change in Kyiv.
Trump has also sided with Russia in a recent UN vote, opposing a resolution condemning Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine. Additionally, he has discussed limiting US intelligence cooperation with Ukraine, a nation that has long relied on American support.
