Moldova receives first LNG batch from US
The Government of Moldova is intensifying the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to reduce dependence on Russian supplies.
According to Energy Minister Viktor Parlikov, the country will receive a shipment of 2.6 million cubic metres of LNG from an American producer in early April, Interfax reports.
The gas was delivered to the Alexandroupolis terminal in Greece by ship and then transported via gas pipelines to Moldova. As clarified by the acting Director of Energokom Viktor Bynzar, we are talking about a test purchase from the Greek DEPA. According to the top manager, the price of this LNG is recognized as competitive.
Official Chisinau is seeking to reduce dependence on the Russian monopolist Gazprom, whose supplies have dropped to 5.7 million cubic metres per day in recent months. This volume is not enough to cover the country's needs during the cold period.
In November, Energocom and DEPA signed an agreement to intensify cooperation in LNG supplies. The Greek company became the first supplier of liquefied gas for Moldova, which allows it to expand sources of imports in the context of the end of the transit contract through Ukraine in 2024.
