Nationwide strike paralyses Italy as unions protest low wages, war policies PHOTO
Italy is experiencing a nationwide strike affecting primarily the transport sector as well as government institutions, including schools.
Several unions have also organised the protest to denounce what they call “genocide in Palestine, arms supplies to Israel, the war economy, and rising military spending,” Caliber.Az reports per La Repubblica.
Demonstrators cite labour exploitation, unfair pay, and the absence of a clear industrial policy as key grievances. Workers are demanding the establishment of a minimum wage of at least €12 per hour. Protesters are also urging the government to take steps toward ending the conflict in Ukraine and to sever diplomatic relations with Israel.
The strike has prompted mass mobilisations in more than 80 cities, including major urban centres such as Rome, Milan, Naples, Genoa, and Palermo. In the capital alone, tens of thousands are expected to participate. Port workers plan to block maritime transport, while leading universities are joining the protests. Student involvement has been particularly visible in demonstrations supporting Palestine.
Significant disruptions to public transport and road traffic are expected throughout the day due to halted services and street marches. Authorities have warned residents and commuters to anticipate delays and plan accordingly.
