Nepal Army enforces nationwide curfew amid escalating unrest Tribhuvan International Airport remains closed
In response to intensifying civil unrest triggered by the ongoing Genz protests, the Nepal Army (NA), now overseeing national security operations, has issued a prohibitory order in effect until 5:00 PM today and extended the nationwide curfew until 6:00 AM tomorrow.
The decision comes as violent demonstrators continue to engage in widespread arson, looting, and vandalism, including attempted assaults on both public and private property, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
According to the NA, the situation has necessitated a firm response to restore law and order. Authorities have stated that further directives will be issued following a comprehensive assessment of the evolving security landscape.
Despite the curfew and prohibitory restrictions, the operation of vehicles providing essential services — including ambulances, hearses, fire engines, and vehicles for healthcare workers and security personnel — will continue without interruption. Relevant individuals and institutions are advised to liaise directly with nearby security units for coordination and necessary facilitation.
On the third consecutive day of the protests, a relative calm has returned to the Kathmandu Valley, owing largely to the robust deployment of security forces, including heavily armed units of the Nepal Army, patrolling the streets. However, tensions remain high amid concerns over potential flare-ups.
The Nepal Army has strongly urged citizens to remain indoors unless leaving home is absolutely necessary for essential activities. Citizens have also been requested to promptly report any incidents of vandalism or violence, particularly those targeting cultural, historical, or religious landmarks.
In an official statement, the Nepal Army appealed for public cooperation in maintaining peace and assisting security forces in curbing criminal activities during this period of national emergency.
Meanwhile, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Nepal’s primary aviation hub, will remain closed until this evening. The shutdown, which began Monday afternoon, was prompted by heavy smoke blanketing the Kathmandu Valley due to fires set during the protests, severely impacting visibility and operational safety.
