Nigeria's year-end celebration makes waves globally

13 January 2025 09:09

CNN describes in its article that Detty December has become one of the most anticipated celebrations in Nigeria, turning the holiday season into an exuberant festival of music, culture, and tradition.

It's a world filled with nonstop parties and late nights. A constant celebration that transforms West Africa, particularly Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, into one of the most sought-after destinations on the continent — if not the world — during the winter months.

"Detty December" is a vibrant period spanning from December to early January when diaspora communities and tourists converge in Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa for an unforgettable experience rich in delicious food, soulful African music, and abundant sunshine.

Beach parties, festivals, and high-energy performances fuel the excitement, while fashion takes center stage, with everyone dressing to impress.

With nearly two-thirds of Nigeria’s population under 25, as reported by the United Nations Population Fund, the country is one of the youngest in the world.

Internationally celebrated Afrobeats stars and guest artists make surprise appearances, while DJs fill the streets, blasting powerful tunes from consoles set up on bright yellow minibuses.

At times, the festivities take over completely. Securing hair salon appointments, affordable flights, or navigating Lagos’ infamous traffic becomes a challenge when the crowds flood in.

"Detty December" (a playful twist on the word "dirty") has evolved into a triumphant celebration of culture, music, and joy. It gained momentum during the traditional holiday influx of diaspora returnees, which was especially heightened in 2018 when Ghana launched its successful “Year of Return” campaign, encouraging people to visit their ancestral homelands.

Over the past five years, the event has gained global attention as IJGBs ("I Just Got Backs") and their friends arrive in droves, ready to relax and celebrate after a fast-paced, demanding year abroad.

For many in the large Nigerian diaspora, it’s a meaningful return, offering an opportunity to reconnect with their roots, traditions, and families while experiencing the vibrant energy of Nigerian culture.

Cynthia Eniola Oyeneyin, who moved from Nigeria to the UK at the age of nine, is a regular during Detty December. Despite spending most of her life abroad, she returns to Nigeria every year to reconnect with family and friends.

“It’s always important for me to go back to my roots and to go back to my culture,” she says. “Nigeria, for me, will always be home, so when I go back, I’m happiest. And mainly because, especially in December, everyone is on a vibe of happiness.”

Many locals also eagerly anticipate joining the festivities.

“I also look forward to attending Christmas parties and family Christmas gatherings which is a cultural thing in Nigeria where we cook and host each other and it’s always a good time,” says Ademidun Akindele. “This December was really good. Lagos is extremely populated during this time of the year but I can’t complain because it’s good for the economy and it’s amazing to see people.”

For starters, Nigeria’s entertainment scene is electric during Detty December, featuring an array of performances from some of the biggest Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, and Tems.

Festivals like the Calabar Carnival in Cross River State, known as “Africa’s biggest street party,” and the Flytime Fest music festival in Lagos offer unforgettable experiences, drawing massive crowds eager to dive into the vibrant culture.

Many events are organized by Cultur FM, an influential brand with a vast global presence, that serves as a unique platform to celebrate African music. Its goal is to highlight the often-overlooked talent within the genre, shifting the focus away from Western DJs who have embraced these sounds, and instead shining a spotlight on the African artists and DJs who shape them.

During the latest Detty December, Cultur FM hosted a series of creative events in Lagos, collaborating with brands like Air Peace, Pepsi Nigeria, and Hennessy Nigeria to create gatherings that celebrated African pride while fostering deep connections with local communities.
