Orbán warns EU leadership poses “greatest threat” to Hungary’s sovereignty
Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has claimed that the current leadership of the European Union represents the “greatest threat” to Hungary’s national sovereignty, according to a document circulated ahead of a congress of his ruling FIDESZ party in Budapest.
The 18-page report, distributed to participants, argues that “liberal leadership in Brussels” is undermining traditional conservative values and attempting to restrict the autonomy of EU member states, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Orbán further alleged that EU institutions played a role in FIDESZ’s defeat in Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary elections, suggesting that they indirectly supported the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar, which has since formed the new government.
“The decisive factor was the strength and coordinated attack of four hostile forces acting against us. Soros plus Brussels plus the Ukrainians plus transnational corporations equals defeat,” the document states, referring to long-time critic George Soros and other international actors Orbán described as political opponents.
Commenting on the new administration, Orbán accused the government of weakening Hungary’s strategic autonomy and prioritising alignment with Brussels over national interests. He also claimed that current policies could expose the country to increased foreign economic influence.
