The appeal process in the case concerning alleged Libyan financing of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s election campaign will begin on March 16, 2026.

According to the communiqué, the case will be examined by the court’s correctional chamber.
Sarkozy, 70, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, was found guilty on September 25 of participating in a criminal conspiracy in connection with Libyan financing of his campaign, but was acquitted of charges of concealing the embezzlement of public funds and passive corruption.
French court records show that he was sentenced to five years in prison for knowingly allowing his associates to seek covert funding from Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya for his successful 2007 presidential campaign. The records further state that Sarkozy was then incarcerated for three weeks, and continues to insist on his innocence.
He also became the first former French president in modern history to receive an actual prison sentence.
