Pentagon signs major contract for construction of two submarines
The U.S. Department of Defense has signed agreements with General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls worth up to $18.4 billion for the construction of two fourth-generation Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines.
As part of the agreements for the construction of the two submarines, investments are also planned for the modernisation of shipyard production facilities and the nuclear shipbuilding programme, Caliber.Az, reports, citing the official website of the U.S. Department of Defense.
The contract with General Dynamics is valued at $12.4 billion, with the potential for the final amount to increase to $17.15 billion.
The contract with Huntington Ingalls is estimated at approximately $1.3 billion.
The U.S. Department of Defense stated that the contracts include options that could raise the total value to $18.445 billion.
Work under the contracts is expected to be completed by June 2036.
