PM: Georgia seeks reset of the strategic partnership with US
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has identified restoring strategic ties with the United States as a central priority for Georgia, according to his government’s annual report.
“For the Government of Georgia, cooperation and strategic partnership with the United States is important and a priority. The task of the Government of Georgia is to achieve a reset of relations with the United States, which implies the restoration of equal, fairness-based relations taking into account the interests of the parties in all areas,” the report states.
The document, covering the implementation of the government program from June 2025 to May 2026 and published on the parliament’s website, outlines efforts to rebuild ties following a downturn in relations.
It says Tbilisi has maintained an active political dialogue with Washington, while the Foreign Ministry is working to shape a new bilateral agenda.
According to the report, several delegations from the US Congress and administration visited Georgia in February and March 2026, while Georgian Foreign Ministry officials travelled to Washington. It also references a phone call between Kobakhidze and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as meetings between Georgian and US officials on the sidelines of international events.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2024 after Georgia adopted a law on foreign agents, prompting the United States to suspend its strategic partnership with Tbilisi, the report notes.
