Poland considers closing Russian diplomatic buildings in tit-for-tat move
Poland is contemplating the closure of Russian diplomatic buildings in response to the recent closure of the Polish consulate in Smolensk by Russia.
The decision by Russia to shut down the consulate was attributed to “unfriendly, anti-Russian actions”, BNN reports.
In a tit-for-tat move, a presidential aide, Marcin Przydacz, stated that Poland reserves the possibility to take similar steps as the principle of reciprocity is crucial in international relations.
This principle suggests that countries should respond to the actions of other nations in a manner that mirrors the treatment they receive. By considering a tit-for-tat response, Poland aims to demonstrate that it will not tolerate actions deemed unfavorable or hostile. However, there are currently no plans to recall Poland’s ambassador to Moscow.
The closure of diplomatic buildings can have significant implications for bilateral relations and may further escalate tensions between the two countries.
