Political analyst: Armenia no longer of interest to West
Armenian political analyst Arman Ghukasyan has stated that Armenia has lost significance for Western powers due to geopolitical shifts and internal divisions within the European Union and the United States.
Ghukasyan highlighted that the West is no longer a monolithic force in the wake of the Ukraine conflict, and former U.S. President Donald Trump, a potential candidate in the upcoming elections, has no interest in engaging with the South Caucasus, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
"The internal contradictions within the EU and complex relations with the U.S. make Armenia entirely uninteresting to Western players," Ghukasyan remarked. "Meanwhile, Yerevan has already strained its ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and its credit of trust in Moscow has been completely exhausted."
The analyst argued that Armenia’s only viable path forward is a change in leadership, with new political forces that have Moscow’s confidence and can negotiate on the basis of Armenia’s own strategic interests rather than external directives.
Ghukasyan also dismissed the current Armenian opposition as unreliable in the Kremlin’s eyes, stating that "for various reasons, they too lack trust in Moscow." He concluded that Armenia’s Western-oriented policy no longer represents a path to development, framing the country’s geopolitical choices as being between Russia and Türkiye rather than between Russia and the West.
"This notion of a Western path for Armenia is nothing more than a fairy tale," Ghukasyan asserted.
